The purpose of this project was to build upon and strengthen the ongoing development of a National Clearinghouse of Geographic Data, and support the ability of the Dirrección Nacional de Topografía (DNT) to enhance capabilities and develop applications that will primarily strengthen the analytical and decision-making requirements of the Dirrección Nacional de Vialidad (DNV). Strengthening of this GIS-based system is expected to contribute to the understanding of socioeconomic consequences of highway and other infrastructure projects. The program is divided into two main components, the first of which focuses on conversion and digital integration of microfilms of survey plats that form the base for the national cadastre; and the second of which focuses on conversion and digital integration of topographical information in urban and rural areas. These two mapping systems have long been formulated separately and have no consistency. With sufficient digital data from the National Electric Company (UTE), this project made a GIS map for a major part of the national territory.
