Bujumbura Port Development

Detailed Design, Tender Assistance, and Construction Supervision (2014-Ongoing):
A grant aid arrangement was signed between the Government of Japan and the Government of Burundi for the development of a container terminal, ship-repairing facilities, dredging of port basin, diversion of storm water canal, and other related construction works. The project aims to increase cargo throughput by 300,000 tons per year (a 241% increase from 2012) to provide a stable distribution channel to allow for economic growth, and reduced dependency on road transport through Tanzania. The total value of works is expected to amount to 2.8 billion Yen. PADECO is responsible for overall port facility planning and design and cost estimation, tendering / procurement management, survey supervision, construction supervision, and quality control.

Preparatory Survey for Improvement of the Port (2013-2014):

The Government of Burundi requested a grant aid to the Government of Japan for the construction of a container terminal, ship repairing facilities, dredging of the port basin, diversion of the storm water canal, and technical assistance and office equipment support. PADECO was contracted by JICA to assess the proposed project and draw the outline design considering the overall port development.

Master Plan Study (2011-2014):
PADECO was responsible for all activities of this JICA study, conducting demand forecasts and freight movement analysis which led to the development of the port development strategy and expansion plan of port facilities in Burundi; a comprehensive freight transport development strategy and master plan (up to 2030); and pre-feasibility studies for potential projects.
