Data Collection Survey on the Comprehensive Transport Plan between Dhaka and Chittagong

Traffic and Transport Planning
Southeast and South Asia
Client Japan International Cooperation Agency
Country・Area Bangladesh
Dhaka and Chittagong (DC) are the two largest cities in Bangladesh, together constituting 13% of the national population and 50% of GDP. The populations of Dhaka and Chittagong have grown at an annual rate of 3.6% and 2.1% respectively (over the period 2000-2015), greatly outpacing the national average. In order to meet this rapidly growing demand, various development plans for the roads, railways and inland waterways and an integrated transport policy and a planning framework was formulated by PADECO, who also conducted the investment prioritization of various identified projects/programs.

The goal of this survey was to formulate phased development plans for each transport mode, to maximize the development potential along the DC corridor. Activities included: (i) identification of priority projects with consideration for existing projects and newly proposed high speed railway and inland water transportation projects among others; (ii) evaluation of the prioritized projects; (iii) identification of major challenges for implementation and potential measures to meet them; and (iv) formulation of a phased development plan.
